Green Escalators.

Not much of a story here today. I just thought the green escalators in the Pavillion, connecting the 4 levels looked so pretty.

The Pavillion is a popular shopping mall servicing much of the greater Durban area. It is very well located, with easy access from the highway.

Who mentioned cake?

The Cape Town photo entitled "When a lady needs cake" prompted this one. Everfresh is a countrywide chain of stores, selling fresh fruit and vegetables. Many of them will also house a small bakery, supplying bread and a small selection of cakes. If you enjoy a Bar One cake (think chocolate sponge, melted bar one and fresh cream) this is the one and only place on the planet to visit, because they have perfected them.

The Big Apple

Yes, I also thought perhaps I'd been working too hard, and my eyes were playing tricks on me! But no, it is really a big apple up there in the sky. Why, I don't know, and today was not the day to find out. It was cold, the wind blowing all ways at the same time, lots of traffic, and not the safest area. So I stopped just long enough to get the photo.

If/when I find out the story behind this, I'll let you know. In the mean time if you have a suggestion as to its purpose, I'd love to hear them.

Schools out.

Durban Girls High School, is as the name implies - for girls only. Many of the english medium high schools in Durban cater for a single gender. This year DGHS celebrates 125 years of educating the young ladies of Durban.

In South Africa "High School" is part of the primary education and implies Grades 8 - 12 or what used to be Std 6 - 10. Way back when, it was called Form 1 - 5. We are currently using the "Grade" system where learners start formal schooling at Grade 1 at 6 years of age, and aim to reach Grade 12 before leaping into life. Learners are typically in the age group 12/13 - 16/17 while they attend a High School. From here they will either go on to some form of tertiary education e.g. university, or join the work force.

How is the school system organised in your town/country?

Wherever I lay my hat is my home.

Unlike the coconut man on Tofo Beach this young man is real. He has chosen a rather pretty corner as his home.

I've no idea why one so young is homeless. From what I could see, he looked like a healthy 20-something.

The end of the line.

This terminus was the end of the line for the No 7 bus, and I think it still is. In days gone by, this was pretty much on the outskirts of town as well, but that has changed significantly over the years.

Another change is in the number of busses servicing these areas, which has decreased as the number of private cars increased.

The person sleep... er waitin..., no definitely sleeping, has a long wait for the next bus. Hope someone wakes him up when it arrives.

If I were to really get "out of town", I'd consider going to Tofo beach in Mozambique. An amazing place if you like to get away from everything.

Don't forget the flowers, dear.

This little shop started many years ago as a few buckets of flowers outside the entrance of the supermarket. They now have this small enclosure from which to sell their goods. Because the back wall is covered with mirrors, this little store looks much larger than it is.

Its always a pleasure to watch a business grow this way, and see the owners succeed, when they provide a good service to the public.
