It's your turn.

Ships have to wait their turn outside the harbour. Some days there can be about 15 ships, parked on the horizon.

Peace and quiet.

If you're looking for a drive in the country, and a quiet, peaceful setting for a cup of tea, a cold beer and a meal, the Inchanga Hotel is the ideal spot.

While it has been a refreshment station for over 100 years, the recent refurbishment gave it a fresh look while retaining the old world appeal.

The clear country air and cool surroundings even on a hot day gives the mind, body and soul a chance to recover from the hustle and bustle of city living. Certainly worth a visit.

Where's the Drummond sawmill?

1906
"The foundations of the sawmill which catered for the whole of Drummond and Inchanga. The timber went by chute down to the railway trucks below."

Along the old main road between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, it's very easy to miss this little piece of wall as you enjoy the spectacular view of the valley of a thousand hills on the other side of the road.

This is all that is left of the sawmill. Even the web yielded nothing about something which must have been a thriving industry in the early part of last century.

This whole area is very quiet these days, and makes for a really pleasant drive, or if you're more energetic and up for a 90km run, you could join a few thousand others in the annual Comrades run.

Empty Beaches.

An0ther very hot day in Durban but the beaches are empty. Yesterday it was very different. Every new year people come in from all over Natal to spend the day at the beach. The news reported standing room only as 80 000 gathered to enjoy sand sea and sun. Lifeguards had their hands full with 300 rescues during the day. Surprisingly no fatalities.

For me the most disturbing statistic was not the fact that 150 children were taken to the local "lost and found"after being seperated from their families, but rather that this morning, 14 of these children were still unclaimed. The beaches are empty, the families have all gone home, but there are still 14 children waiting to be collected!

I shouldn't be shocked. This is an annual occurance. One year it was already two weeks into that new year and 3 children were still waiting for someone to claim them. There are some things in life which are just beyond my comprehension.

Sunny skies and beach umbrellas.

Sun, sea, beach, a deck chair, and an umbrella. What more could anyone ask for at this time of the year.

Remember: Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Enjoy every minute.

While I didn't participate in the January Theme day, these 118 City Daily Photo bloggers did. Take a few minutes to enjoy some amazing pics.

Wherever you go, the sea is still there.

The view from Shongweni Brewery was breathtaking. The beautiful weather the past week has left wonderful clean air making it possible to see the sea, and even a passing ship, from 28km inland.

Here's wishing the whole City Daily Photo community and all our visitors a happy and prosperous 2008.

Local Supermarket.

It's doubtful that these ladies make much from their little supermarket stalls, considering the stock on hand at the end of the day. This was one of about 5 such displays around this carpark, all of them selling exactly the same goods.
