The Old Fort #2

This is the second of the two plaques on either side of the entrance to The Old Fort Chapel.

The Old Fort
Within this area was situated the camp in which a small British force under Captain T. Charlton Smith of the 27th Regiment (Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers) was beleaguered by the emigrant Boers under Commandant Andries Pretorius in 1842. To secure relief for the garrison, Dick King rode 600miles to Grahamstown.
From 1842 to 1897 it was occupied by various regiments and detachments of the British Army.
