Was it because I wasn't welcoming that I wasn't invited to the Bee Conference? I really should try to be nicer next time.
While passing a garage at the top of Berea road, I noticed this swarm, which had bedded down for the night. A few of them were still buzzing around trying to find the ideal spot. Most people walking past were oblivious to their presence.
This is my second close encounter with a swarm, and each time I've been amazed at how docile they seem to be. All the buzzing and activity was non-threatening, because all they wanted was a safe place to stay - the same as any one of us. Perhaps we just fortunate to have tame bees here?

wow, this is amazing, i've always thought bees always need a cocoon or something.. but here they are exposed to the world, thanks for sharing this photo
Yes, it is amazing, and I hope that these are the kind of bees we need to pollinate our plants. The latest news about bees dying in large numbers is quite critical and ominous for our food supply.
Both times I've seen this, they seem to settle down at about 3 in the afternoon, and move out again at first light. This is very much a temporary home.
There's a lot of roadworks and other construction happening in the area, so perhaps they found their natural home uninhabitable, so are looking for a new one.

I've been keen on bees but it does seem as Kate points out we should treat them respectfully - so long as they stay outside I'll be happy to do that.
