These days we have to shop in the dark. Being a large supermarket, they have emergency generators which operate a few lights, and of course the tills. The freezers are covered during the 2.5 hour outage, in an effort to prevent the frozen goods from defrosting.
Our electricity supplier is sufficiently well organised - they have now published the planned outages for each area, so we have the opportunity to arrange our lives around this.
While we all try to make the best of a bad situation, the government has no excuse for ignoring the warnings over the years. Although our deputy president apologised for this (non) action, this doesn't help businesses all over the country.
Through the Transkei

Up early again, cos everyone's itching to get through the Transkei. When
the bikes start revving, you know you'd better hurry, or you could be left
behind....

Was it not president Mbeki himself that apoligised.
From what I understand, Mbeki has apologised for his part the whole situation which was first highlighted about 8-9 years ago.
The current deputy president apologised for her non action 2 years ago when the matter was brought to her attention.
From the news report, her presentation was done by candlelight when the function was subjected to load shedding.
