No, its not for real. Its humor. South Africans have a dry (and often dark) sense of humor.
I rather miss it. Living in the US my comments are often misread when I am trying to be amusing.
Deadpan delivery is not normal, apparently.
I have the same sense of humor also.
My mom would love those signs. She hand paints little signs for her garden like are very similiar.
